Product

Business models are about getting people to take action in exchange for value. But here’s the truth:
🚫 Not all users are equal. Some help you grow, while others drain your resources.

When you get a spike in traffic, only a small percentage of visitors will actually engage with your product. Many are just passing through—and that’s okay. The key is to identify and focus on the right users.

The Three Types of Users

1. Good Users (Your Core Audience)

These are the users who:
✔ Bring long-term value 💰
✔ Actively engage with your product
✔ Convert into paying customers

💡 Example: A SaaS startup finds that users who complete the onboarding process are 3x more likely to subscribe.

🟡 2. Neutral Users (Potential Amplifiers)

These users may never pay for your product, but they:
✔ Amplify your brand through word-of-mouth 📢
✔ Invite others who do convert
✔ Engage with free content but don’t upgrade

💡 Example: A freemium user on Spotify might never subscribe, but they share playlists, driving new sign-ups.

3. Bad Users (Resource Drainers)

These users:
❌ Distract your focus with low-value behaviors
❌ Consume resources without adding value
❌ Skew your analytics, making decision-making harder

💡 Example: Bots, spammers, or users who sign up just to exploit free trials.

How to Segment the Right Users

🔹 Use Analytics: Identify who engages, converts, and provides real value.
🔹 Track Effort vs. Engagement: The harder it is to use your product, the more serious the user must be.
🔹 Adjust Your Model: Choose a pricing or incentive model that aligns with your segmentation:

  • Freemium – Good for viral products with engaged free users.
  • Free Trial – Best when users convert after experiencing value.
  • Upfront Payment – Works when trust is already established.
  • Ad-Funded – Makes sense when scale is key.

Stop Counting Users—Start Optimizing for the Right Ones

📌 Don’t chase vanity metrics like sign-ups.
📌 Focus on high-value users and segment accordingly.
📌 Make strategic adjustments to attract and retain the best customers.

By optimizing for quality over quantity, you’ll build a business that’s sustainable, profitable, and efficient. 🚀
